Injured and plagued in Vienna

Vienna is a very beautiful city. It was very clean, comfortable, and there were magnificent gardens, palaces and palace-like buildings everywhere. My host showed me all around the city, brought me to an amazing Pakistani restaurant (a buffet where you eat as much as you want and pay as much as you want), and took me to drink local wine in a part of the city with vineyards. We had a number of interesting conversations and quite the lovely time.

Now, this being said, on my first day I suffered a nasty spill. Since I had just arrived I was loaded up with my luggage, and what could have been just a little slip on the sidewalk turned into a pretty bad fall. My knees came crashing to the pavement and I didn't realize quite how bad it was until I was sitting on the tram and people were staring horrified at my legs. I reluctantly looked down to examine the damage and saw that my left knee cap had been completely skinned and blood was running down my leg. The other knee had also been skinned and bruised but not quite as badly. For the next few days I could barely walk at all and after that the pain was bad enough that walking around was not easy. But of course I still did it.

If this wasn't enough, I had somehow developed a terrible rash. It was worst on my hands but showed up on my legs and feet as well. I'm still not sure what caused it, but I think the sun may have had something to do with it. My hands were swollen, horribly itchy, and quite painful. I thought I had been stricken by the plague and was probably going to die.

With my hands and legs out of commission, my desire for adventure had pretty much been squashed. I was planning on WWOOFing (essentially doing farm work in exchange for room and board), then going off to Budapest, and then seeing where the road took me. But hobbling around and barely being able to use your hands is really not conducive to either farm work or adventuring on your own. So I said farewell to my plans for solo adventure and decided the best thing would be to join Lizzie and Carla as they toured around Italy.

Frolicking in the Alps

We felt like we were reenacting "The Sound of Music" as we hiked through the green rolling hills and fields dotted with white and yellow flowers. And we passed by some delightful hairy creatures.

Lederhosen and Dirndls!

My experience of Munich in one word: beer. Beer gardens, beer halls, giant mugs of beer. For some reason people in Munich (a totally modern city) haven't given up on traditional ways of dress - lederhosen and dirndls. And it's not a kitschy touristy thing. This is how people dress. Mind you not all of them, not even most of them, but the few people who did certainly added to the atmosphere. It was fun to take part in the joyous tradition of drinking in beer halls. There were big bands playing, we learned a traditional drinking song, and ate enormous pretzels.

As with every European city, Munich had its share of beautiful buildings and statues. And for some reason, the people of Munich took it upon themselves to turn one of the monuments (of some guy - I have no idea who he is) into a Michael Jackson memorial. So strange to see in the middle of Munich... But hey why not!?

Is Prague REALLY Magic?

I couldn't tell you. I didn't come across any wizards or unicorns (I did randomly stumble upon a museum of alchemy - but I would hardly classify that as magical, or worth the admission price). There was a neat astronomical clock (sadly inaccurate), a random line of penguins, and a cool statue by the water (freaked me out at first because I thought it was a real person).

I wouldn't really recommend the food... but there is certainly good beer! We went to a microbrewery and tried 8 different kinds. The most interesting was the bright green nettle beer that tasted like, well, the kind of plants you'd find in Amsterdam. Since I took most of my pictures with my camera I can only offer a few to view now. So you'll just have to wait for the enhanced post about Prague. And then YOU can decide how magical Prague really is.

Amsterdam Interlude

For many reasons - and some I still can't quite account for - I decided I didn't want to continue the trip in the same way that it had been going. I wanted this to be an adventure of the highest order and going through a set list of locations and seeing mainly tourist sights wasn't really cutting it for me. As soon as I knew that Carla was going to join Lizzie on the rest of her trip, it opened the door for me to take off. I grabbed this opportunity and ran with it, not having any idea where I was going to end up. And this is exactly how I wanted it. Since I had made some friends in Amsterdam and also wished I could have stayed longer in the first place, it made all the sense in the world to go back. Also, if I hadn't had a chance to ride a bicycle in Amsterdam I really hadn't experienced Amsterdam, had I?

So I returned to Amsterdam and had the most fabulous time hanging out. Over the course of the weekend I borrowed a bicycle and rode down to a huge park, made homemade burritos, spent a night engaged in philosophical discussion, stayed up all night long at a bonfire by a dock. Everything about this weekend was so wonderful and I met the most incredible people. It was exactly what I was looking for!

I would have stayed forever but I did want to explore a few more countries. And I figured I could always go back. Since I wanted to go to Prague and Lizzie was there alone I decided to meet her there. My first train to Prague was filled with bicycles, and it brought me to Berlin, where I had the best falafel sandwich of my life (yes, better than Israel). On my second train I befriended a guy from California who now lives in an Eco-Village in Budapest. We spent the ride talking, he shared his delicious vegan food with me, and we marveled over the crazy thunderstorm the entire ride to Prague.

[I found this fortune on the ground (I think in Berlin?). SO MANY strangers (although they're no longer strangers) have recently brought great meaning to my life.]

A bit of Berlin

Berlin was definitely an interesting city, and if I wasn't borderline insane from exhaustion I would have appreciated it so much more!

We stayed with the parents of Carla, a Couch Surfing friend we had met in Paris, and they treated us with the utmost kindness and hospitality. They fed us delicious food, including an expansive breakfast spread every morning of meats, cheeses, breads and the most amazing collection of homemade jams. I've never known anyone who was so crazy about making jam and also so good at it! The fun thing about breakfast is that we would sit, talk, drink coffee or tea and not even realize that two hours had passed.

When we weren't eating breakfast, we explored the city. Berlin is obviously a city so rich in all kinds of history. We checked out some important and historical sights (Berlin Wall including the East Side Gallery, Holocaust Memorial, Checkpoint Charlie, cool old buildings) and also made sure to get a taste of the artistic and hip side of Berlin (street art, Tacheles).

We spent one evening hanging out with fellow Couch Surfers, a couple evenings watching the Euro Cup, and one night roaming around one of the city parks, passing by hip teenagers playing electronic music on stereos, while we sang Disney songs at the top of our lungs. Of course.

It was also this last night that I decided I wanted to go back to Amsterdam and Carla was going to continue on traveling with Lizzie. It was at this point that the whole universe seemed to shift...

An update (finally!)

I'm back in Israel and have some time to relax, reflect, and catch up on blogging for the past few weeks. So many absolutely crazy things have happened! See below for a tiny taste of the absurdity (yes this is a random woman petting a random rooster that was roaming around the streets of Napoli). Stay tuned for plentiful posts!

One reason why I haven't been blogging

My father always told me never to eat anything bigger than my head. But he never said anything about drinking...

Dear Everyone

To those who have been following me- thank you! I'm sorry to say that I am taking a little hiatus from blogging for now. I plan to return and inform you all of my adventures- but trying to keep track of everything while it's happening has become a bit too much for me. So check back here in a few weeks to find out about all the awesome stuff I've done!
All the best,
Laura (and Dora)
